Kathryn Alice Olley

STOCKIST STELLA & STAR LYTHAM
Contemporary Narrative Illustrator & Lancashire Artist of the Year 2024

Art – Made to be explored

Kathryn Alice Olley is a Lancashire-based contemporary narrative illustrator, known for creating immersive, story-led artworks that invite exploration, emotional connection and discovery. Working from her studio in the coastal town of St Annes-on-Sea, her practice combines traditional hand-drawn watercolour, ink and pen work with digital composition, resulting in richly layered visual narratives designed to be explored over time.

Creativity has been a lifelong companion, but Kathryn’s professional artistic journey began following a period of chronic stress. A pivotal conversation with her GP — “What did you enjoy doing as a child?” — led her back to painting. Within weeks, she picked up a brush for the first time in years, joining local art classes before continuing her studies with the London Art College. What began as a personal creative outlet quickly evolved into a public art practice, culminating in her being named Lancashire Artist of the Year 2024.

Recognition & Awards

In 2025, Kathryn was selected as a finalist in the Enterprise Vision Awards (Creative Industry category) — the UK’s largest celebration of women in business — and as a national finalist in the Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards (Early Stage Stand Out – North West), often described as the “Grammys of Entrepreneurship.”

She is also proud to be a recipient of Theo Paphitis’s Small Business Sunday (#SBS), joining a national network of leading small businesses.

Official Artist – Lytham Festival

In 2025, Kathryn was appointed Official Artist in Residence for Lytham Festival, one of the UK’s leading live music events.

As part of the festival programme, she created a large-scale panoramic artwork celebrating the atmosphere, legacy and people of the event. This followed her earlier commission “LYTHAMMANIA” — an immersive 14-metre installation transforming plain festival fencing into a vibrant, story-rich visual centrepiece filled with detail, character and playful cultural references.

A strictly limited collection of fine art prints is available, with optional hand-embellishment using paint, pen work and glow-in-the-dark detailing, ensuring each piece remains a unique collector’s edition.

Artistic Practice

Kathryn specialises in contemporary narrative illustration, crafting highly detailed panoramic works that capture place, people and shared memory. Each artwork is built from individually illustrated elements, carefully layered and composed digitally, before being hand-finished using watercolour, fine liner, subtle shimmer and UV detailing.

Her work is characterised by:

  • intricate storytelling
  • hidden visual details
  • emotional resonance
  • a strong sense of place and identity

Each piece is created not simply to be viewed, but to be explored — revealing new moments, connections and discoveries over time.

Elfie & Elfvis™

As part of her evolving creative practice, Kathryn has introduced Elfie & Elfvis™, a newly created narrative character duo first appearing within The Lancashire Riviera — the inaugural piece in a growing series of immersive, story-led works.

Hidden subtly within the landscape, Elfie & Elfvis™ are designed to be discovered rather than immediately seen, encouraging a slower, more curious way of viewing. Their presence reflects Kathryn’s wider artistic philosophy — that meaningful details reveal themselves over time, rewarding those who look a little closer.

While the characters exist within her richly detailed compositions, they are also being thoughtfully developed beyond the artwork as a refined visual identity. In contrast to their illustrated appearances within each scene, Elfie & Elfvis™ are reinterpreted through a minimal, expressive ink style for use across branding, publishing and carefully curated lifestyle pieces.

This dual approach allows the characters to exist both within the narrative and as a recognisable brand mark — bridging fine art, storytelling and collectible design.

As future works unfold, Elfie & Elfvis™ will continue to appear throughout Kathryn’s growing body of work, forming a quiet thread that connects each piece and invites audiences to explore, search and return.

Creative Collaborations & Media

Kathryn’s work has been exhibited at the Grundy Art Gallery and featured across major media platforms including BBC News Online, BBC Radio 2 with Sara Cox, ITVX, and BBC Radio Lancashire, alongside regional press coverage.

She has collaborated with MasterChef: The Professionals winner Oli Martin, creating a bespoke narrative artwork for his Michelin-listed restaurant Aven in Preston — a piece designed to reflect the identity, story and atmosphere of the space.

Kathryn has also worked in partnership with Bowker BMW Preston, developing a large-scale place-led artwork celebrating the city of Preston. The project was filmed within the historic Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library, positioning her work within one of the region’s most culturally significant institutions.

In addition, her work has received recognition and engagement from prominent cultural figures and organisations including Johnny Marr, Claudia Winkleman, Tileyard Music, Studio Lambert, Emma Barnett and Giles Coren.

In 2025, she was invited to serve as a guest judge for Lancashire Artist of the Year, supporting and mentoring emerging creative talent.

Commissions, Collaborations & Collectors

Through Kathryn Alice Art, Kathryn creates detailed narrative artworks that capture the spirit of places, people and shared experiences. Her work is often commissioned to mark a moment — a town, an event, a venue or a story worth celebrating — and is designed to be explored, recognised and talked about.

Projects range from large-scale public and promotional artworks to bespoke pieces for hospitality spaces and private collectors, each built from research, local references and hidden details that reward close looking.

As her work continues to grow nationally, Kathryn collaborates with festivals, venues and organisations seeking meaningful, story-led visual work — artwork that fosters a sense of belonging, pride and connection to place.
